The armor rating is the amount of damage that is absorbed by the armor. Only incoming damage that surpasses the armor rating is actually decreasing hit points.
 
In case an armor raises a part of the [[Main attributes and derived attributes|main attributes]] above the race maximum (powered armors can, for example, raise [[Strength|strength]], this character has even more strength when wearing that armor. If it was a human character with Strength of 10, it is now quite literally a character with super human strength when wearing that armor. 
That being said, the negative effects of armor pieces can not reduce the [[Main attributes and derived attributes|main attributes]] to below the race minimum.
